about

Sleep isn’t just asking for rest. It’s asking for indulgent comfort in the face of the Anthropocene’s mass extinction. It’s asking for the ease that comes with isolation. It wants to sever and cauterize the bleeding attachments that connect us to each other.

Those of us who are “other” know this desire well. The individuals with the most important insights into the suffering this society creates are also those who are most actively marginalized from power and agency. These people suffer and disconnect (or are disconnected) from communities/groups that ultimately need them. The “others” are left to choose between the pain and comfort of isolation or the far more disturbing act of continuing to try to attach to a society that rejects you.

Sleep is the denial of connection and so often it's the only thing I can bring myself to do.

lyrics

A book in my hand.
A blank on my face.
A story I cannot understand or perceive.
An objection I cannot articulate or carry very far in this heat.

So let me sleep.
Let me sleep.
Just let me sleep.
