about

The track opens with a passage meant to confuse the distinction between our own intolerable behavior and our ability to own or feel responsible for that behavior by setting up an out-of-body observation of self. We are simultaneously the actor and the observer. The line “Not asking to make not being answered correct” draws attention to our willing denial to even ask the question and thus acknowledge our own behavior. The relationship between agency and observation, fear of the real and fear of the absurd, living in an evil empire on stolen land and fearing walking by the arroyos at night are set as separate concepts. The separation between these concepts begins to break down when pain is introduced. Pain becomes the bridge between what is dreadful because it cannot be truly confronted and owned and what is dreadful because of what lurks in our lizard brain. The pain grounds us, and creates a way of knowing ourselves and our actions with immediacy and focus. And as our fears are unified in a process of pain, we are finally real and connected to the present. “The question unanswered and unuttered” then becomes “but what the fuck else?” Now that you’re connected to reality, what will you do? Your reclaimed power begs for an answer.
